Ukraine Receives Grant From Germany To Restore Energy Infrastructure

Ministry of Energy of Ukraine has received a €45 million grant from Germany, to restore the energy sector after Russian attacks on energy infrastructure. 

Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, Chairman of the Board of National Power Company Ukrenergo a state-owned company managed by the Ministry of Energy (NPC) Ukrenergo, signed a document authenticating the management decision taken by the German Development Bank KfW to finance the project “Improving the Efficiency of Electricity Transmission”.

“It is very important for us that the funds can be used in various areas to restore and strengthen the resilience of the transmission system facilities under enemy attack,” said Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Halushchenko.

These funds are expected to be used to purchase equipment for energy-efficient modernization, automation, and reconstruction of Ukrenergo’s substations. With support from the German Development Bank KfW, during the period of Russia’s military aggression, NPC has attracted more than €177 million in loans and grants to restore and develop the electricity transmission network. Halushchenko also thanked Germany for the largest contribution to the Energy Support Fund of Ukraine – €225 million.

Geopolitical factors such as the Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Russian force’s attack on Ukraine’s infrastructure affected the country’s energy infrastructure facilities. According to DTEK energy company, three Ukrainian thermal power plants were damaged.

With assistance to Ukraine from Germany recently transferred another large package of military aid to Ukraine. Among other things, the Ukrainian Armed Forces received new drones, and shells for tanks and artillery. In addition, in February, General Carsten Breuer, Bundeswehr Inspector General, promised Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi short-term support for Ukraine in the amount of more than 100 million euros.
