UK-based renewable energy developer Field has set sights on expanding operations into Italy. The firm is mulling over the development of a multi-gigawatt portfolio of battery storage projects across Italy.

Field is looking at the acceleration of the deployment of large-scale battery storage projects in the country. The firm will look into the operation of the projects itself and will employ its proprietary energy trading platform, Gaia. Towards this, it is looking for sites that can prove to be favourable for battery storage and the announcement of its first project in Italy is expected soon.

Presently, Field Italia, the firm’s new arm established in Rome, aspires to expand its development pipeline. With this in mind, it is realising land opportunities.  Recently, the firm also concluded an  investment round of £77m. It also wants to expand the team.

Emanuele Taibi, General Manager at Field Italia, said, “I’m excited to bring my expertise to Field and help establish its Italian operations. Italy’s renewable potential and complex geography makes battery storage a perfect technology to accelerate the decarbonisation of its power system and we hope that the incoming regulation will help to kickstart what could become one of the top three markets for storage in Europe.” He further added, “Energy transition is my passion and it’s a privilege to be joining a talented team of colleagues who are equally as determined to make the transition a reality. We can achieve this by developing, financing, building and operating the infrastructure we need to reach net zero, starting with battery storage.”

Field Chief Executive Officer Amit Gudka remarked that for Field’s operations in Italy form a key market as the firm looks at international expansion. “Italy has great potential and a clear need for battery storage, and with the right regulation could become a leading market in Europe’s energy transition,” he concluded.
