Ujala Scheme: Odisha Tops The Chart With Highest LED Bulbs Ujala Scheme: Odisha Tops The Chart With Highest LED Bulb Coverage

Odisha has now topped the list for extending the widest coverage of energy efficient LED bulbs under the Union government’s Ujala scheme. The latest information furnished by the Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Manohar Lal Khattar revealed that compared to other states, the coastal state saw the highest distribution of the energy efficient appliance under the UJALA (Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All) scheme.

The minister in his recent written reply before the Parliament gave a state-wise distribution of LED bulbs nationwide till June 2024. The government launched the UJALA (Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All) scheme to provide energy-efficient LED bulbs to domestic consumers at an affordable price. To date, over 36.9 crore LED bulbs have been distributed across India. Among the 37 states that have shared their LED bulb distribution data, Odisha has emerged as the biggest beneficiary of the scheme, with 52,270,570 bulbs installed across the state.

The minister also shared data on the top five states leading in LED bulb installation. According to the data, Odisha has surpassed Gujarat, which installed 41,448,713 bulbs, and Uttar Pradesh, which added 26,295,737 bulbs. Andhra Pradesh, which was at the top of the list last year, now ranks fourth with 22,040,227 bulbs installed. Maharashtra follows with 21,986,569 bulbs, and Karnataka is next with 24,264,486 bulbs.

In a written reply to Parliament, the minister stated, “To date, over 36.9 crore LED bulbs have been distributed nationwide. The state-wise details of distribution are provided in Annexure (b). UJALA has been instrumental in annually conserving 48.4 billion units of electrical energy and reducing electricity bills by Rs. 19,337 crore by promoting energy-efficient lighting solutions.”

Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture of Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSUs) under the Ministry of Power, was the implementing agency for this scheme. Under UJALA, consumers could purchase LED bulbs through DISCOMs or designated Distribution Agencies (DAs) appointed by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL).
