The Power Minister of Tripura, Ratan Lal Nath, has revealed that the state government has worked out at a plan that sets sights on generating close to 500 MW of power via solar energy. The goal is to be achieved by 2030. He further added that Germany’s Deutsche Gesellschaft Fur international Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) executed a study in the study aided by The Research Triangle Institute India (RTI).

The minister stated, ““The survey was organized on how much electricity is required in Tripura in 2030. This roadmap is divided into three levels including short-term, medium-term and long-term. The task has been entrusted to the German Development Agency. Basically, a roadmap has been prepared for the necessary steps to be taken regarding electricity in the coming days.” He said that Tripura is placing emphasis on green energy as the primary focus is on the electricity needed by 2030.

“Around 692 megawatts of power will be needed by 2030, as daily the need for power is increasing. At present we have 9, 71 Lakh consumers which is increasing day after day,” the Power Minister revealed. Pre-2018, the state had employed a solar power plant with capacity around 6.4 MW, however, now, it is 12.54 MW.

He further shed light on future plans on solar energy, “Within five years, it (solar energy) was doubled. Our plan is that in 2025, we will generate 135 megawatts of clean energy through solar while within 2030, we have planned to generate 500-megawatt power through solar and planning to cover 1,158-gram panchayat and village committees if we can provide power using solar then the electric tariff will be decreased. So that the power generated from the thermal power plant can be used in industrial development,” he concluded.

Eyeing acceleration of solar power production in Tripura, the government has also entered into several agreements on floating and ground mounted solar projects with NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation), including 130 MW floating solar project, which seems promising.

Besides the said NTPC project, TREDA is already bullish on solar power – mainly distributed – to ensure that tribal settlements that lie to the interiors have electricity connection as conventional power supply is presently not possible there.
