Global solar cell makers – Trinasolar has announced that its industrial, larger-area 350.4 cm² n-type bifacial TOPCon solar cells achieved 26.58% efficiency, setting a new record for large-area industrial TOPCon solar cells. This achievement has been certified by the Institute for Solar Energy Research in Hamelin (ISFH CalTeC), Germany.

This marks the 28th time Trinasolar has established or surpassed the world record in cell/module conversion efficiency or output power, further underscoring the company’s strong innovation capabilities, according to a media statement from the Chinese solar cell manufacturing company.

Creating new record

The record-breaking solar cell features an innovative rectangular wafer design, first invented by Trinasolar. “The substrate is an n-type phosphorus-doped Cz silicon wafer with a high minority carrier lifetime. By integrating it with tunnel oxide passivating contact, advanced boron-doped emitter, advanced light trapping, and very fine line printing technologies, the front-side efficiency reaches 26.58% for this industrial-size bifacial n-type TOPCon cell,” the statement read.

“We are pleased to announce the remarkable result achieved by our research team,” said Gao Jifan, Chairman and CEO of Trinasolar. “This achievement demonstrates the strong technical potential of TOPCon solar cells. Trinasolar will continue to invest in the R&D of TOPCon solar cells and modules, making TOPCon the most competitive technology while strengthening intellectual property protection and ensuring that advanced technologies remain firmly under our control.”

Last month, Trinasolar announced that its industrial, larger-area 210×182 mm² n-type bifacial TOPCon cell achieved an efficiency of 25.9%, breaking a 7-year-long world record set by Fraunhofer. It took Trinasolar just one month to increase the efficiency of the TOPCon solar cell from 25.9% to 26.58%. This impressive achievement highlights the enormous potential of TOPCon solar cells and further solidifies Trinasolar’s leadership in the PV industry.

Indian Perspective

Trinasolar has established a strong presence across India through its solar cells and modules. In India, while the trade of solar modules from companies like Trinasolar has become difficult due to the imposition of the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), the country still relies on imported solar cells from Chinese solar companies. This is primarily due to the limited domestic solar cell manufacturing capacity.

The introduction of higher-efficiency solar cells is positive news for Indian solar module manufacturers, who are increasingly exploring TOPCon-based cells to meet growing demand. According to industry data, only a few solar cell makers in India are currently producing TOPCon solar cells. In India, companies like Emmvee are producing solar cells with a 2.5 GW capacity, and Premier Energies is also working toward the same goal. The company recently debuted on the Indian stock market to raise funds for the development of TOPCon solar cells in India.
