Toyota-Maruti Suzuki’s Upcoming electric SUV Will Run 500 km in Single Battery Charge

Global automakers Toyota and Maruti Suzuki are developing a midsized electric SUV, which will be the duo’s first substantial entry into the electric vehicles’ market. The five-seater SUV built on skateboard architecture known as 27PL, derived from Toyota’s 40PL, will be powered by localized battery and other body parts.

The EV will be fitted with an electric motor and a 48 kWh battery package that can generate 138 horse-power to run the SUV 400km in a single charge. It will also come with two electric motors and a larger 59 kWh battery that can produce 170 horse-power to allow the vehicle to run 500 km in a single charge.

The length of the SUV will be about 4.3 meters, width of 1.8 meters and height of 1.6 meters sitting on a wheelbase of about 2.7 meters. The localized materials’ made body parts and battery packs are expected to keep the ex-showroom cost of the SUV in the competitive range of Rs 13-15 lakh. The electric vehicle will be bigger in comparison to India’s top selling electric vehicle, Tata Nexon EV, and also ICE Hyundai Creta. The SUV will be manufactured in Suzuki’s Gujarat plant both for the Indian and overseas markets.

The SUV will hit the markets somewhere around 2025 in two configurations – two wheeled drive (in 2WD) and four wheeled drive (4WD). The electric skateboard will allow for a spacious cabin making and optimal space for the packaging of the battery. The design is expected to be based on the existing Toyota’s bZ4X crossover that stands on eTNGA platform.

In a recent interaction with the media, Chairman of Maruti Suzuki India, RC Bhargava, said that vehicles produced by Suzuki Motor Gujarat (SMG) will be sold by them only. He also confirmed that the mid-sized SUV will be rolled out for sales by the middle of this decade. Suzuki Motor Corporation had also announced an investment of Rs 10,445 crore to locally produce batteries and EVs in Gujarat. Rs 7,300 crore will be specifically allotted for a new BEV battery factory.
