The Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited (THDC India) has now planned to boost floating solar projects. It has issued a tender seeking bids to prepare Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) in this regard. These projects will be located in eight states. These include-Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra. The last date to submit the bids is December 9, 2024.

The tender sought support from technical consulting agencies. THDC envisions empanelment of these firms for three years. During this time, these firms will prepare DPRs for floating solar power projects nationwide. The tender covers projects up to 100 MW capacity, those exceeding 100 MW and up to 500 MW. Empaneled consultants/firms will be eligible to participate in future THDCIL tenders for these services. Eligible bidders can be sole bidders, lead partners in joint ventures, or lead members of consortia.

Bidders must qualify as Class-I Local Suppliers. According to the Ministry of Power (MoP) order dated November 16, 2021, Class-I Local Suppliers must offer goods or services with at least 60% local content.

Commissioned Floating Solar Projects

Floating solar has now emerged as a good alternative for many land-locked states. Several states like Bihar, Odisha and others who lack land to host large solar parks have planned such projects. Some key commissioned floating solar projects in India include the 90 MW project in Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh; the 100 MW Ramagundam project in Telangana; the 92 MW Kayamkulam project in Kerala; and the 25 MW Simhadri project in Andhra Pradesh.

The Omkareshwar Floating Solar Park is located in Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh. The project has estimated revenue increase of Rs 64 crores for SGEL. The company’s total project portfolio is 56,802.40 MW, including Hydro, Pumped Storage, Thermal, and Renewable Energy projects.

The Ramagundam 100 MW Floating Solar project was constructed with an investment of Rs 423 crores through BHEL. The project is divided into 40 blocks, each containing 2.5 MW. Each block consists of a floating platform and an array of 11,200 solar modules.
