Tata Power’s 4.3 GW Solar Cell & Module Plant In TN Inaugurated By CM

As MK Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu formally inaugurated its latest 4.3 MW cell and module manufacturing plant, TP Solar Ltd finds itself in a sweet spot. Tata Power’s Solar manufacturing arm & a subsidiary of Tata Power renewable Energy Limited new plant at Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu underscores its position among the leaders in India’s solar manufacturing  landscape.

The new 4.3 GW solar cell and module manufacturing plant is India’s largest single-location solar manufacturing facility, equipped with ability to make cutting-edge TOPCon and Mono Perc technologies. 0.3 GW is the cell making capacity. Designed to meet India’s growing renewable energy demand, it will produce high-efficiency solar cells and modules at a time when solar cells in particular remain in high demand, commanding premiums of over 80% on Chinese imports, thanks mainly to the DCR cell requirements mandated by the government. That translates to a sustained period of demand and ready buyers for its output for the new plant, which will of course seek buyers outside Tata Power as for its products.

For Tamil Nadu, the newest solar plant is a significant addition to its solar roster after Vikram Solar’s earlier plant setup near Chennai.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD, Tata Power, said: “We are immensely proud to launch this advanced solar manufacturing facility, which is a testament to Tata Power’s commitment to building a sustainable and self-reliant India. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru M.K. Stalin, for inaugurating Tata Power’s solar manufacturing plant. We are also deeply grateful to the Honourable Minister for Industries & Commerce, Thiru T.R.B. Rajaa, and other dignitaries for their presence and support. Not only does it showcase innovative technology, but it also plays a crucial role in community development by creating job opportunities, with 80% of the workforce comprising women. We look forward to continuing our contribution to Tamil Nadu’s economic growth and India’s clean energy transition.”

In addition to the Tirunelveli plant, the company also operates a world-class manufacturing facility established in 1992 in Bengaluru, Karnataka. It has a production capacity of 682 MW for solar modules and 530 MW for solar cells.

Tata Power has 4350 MW of solar assets out of a total portfolio of 25.6 GW, with 10.53 GW of clean energy capacity under construction. The firm expects clean and green energy (hydro, solar and wind) to account for 70% of its portfolio by 2030.
