Noida International Airport Set To Boost Renewable Energy Usage By Chitrika Grover/ Updated On Thu, Nov 7th, 2024 Highlights : Tata Power Trading Company Ltd. plans to supply 10.8 MW of wind power to NIA, sourced from TTPREL TPREL plans to develop a 13 MW on-site solar power capacity to support the airport’s energy requirements Noida International Airport (NIA), today entered into a partnership with Tata Power, an integrated power company, to incorporate renewable energy into the aviation company. Under this arrangement, Tata Power Trading Company Ltd. (TPTCL) plans to supply 10.8 MW of wind power to NIA, sourced from Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd. (TPREL). Additionally, TPREL plans to develop, operate, and maintain a 13 MW on-site solar power capacity to support the airport’s energy requirements. Together, TPREL’s wind and solar installations will meet NIA’s energy needs. Since 2014, a total of 73 airports have switched to 100% green energy usage. Airport operators, including the Airports Authority of India (AAI), have installed solar power plants at various locations and airports for the generation and self-consumption of green and renewable energy to promote green energy usage at airports. In addition, a few airports are also procuring green energy through open access. So far, solar projects have been installed at airports in Bengaluru, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Hyderabad, Chennai, Calicut, Trichy, Vijayawada, and Tirupati. Through this Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) collaboration, TPTCL will manage the complete renewable energy portfolio, ensuring NIA’s clean energy needs are met. Two PPAs have been established to address both wind and solar power supply. Under this agreement, Tata Power has also committed to developing critical dry utilities, including essential electrical infrastructure, and will provide operation and maintenance (O&M) services for this infrastructure over a 25-year period to meet the airport’s smart energy needs. The agreement for these services has already been signed between Tata Power and NIA. With a total investment of Rs. 550 crore (~$66 million) in solar and wind power supply, as well as in essential dry utilities and smart energy infrastructure. This agreement signifies Tata Power’s 25-year commitment to providing clean energy for NIA. This partnership also sets a model for green infrastructure that could be replicated across India’s rapidly expanding airport network, with over 200 new airports expected in the next two decades. The first phase of Noida International Airport, featuring one runway and one terminal, will have the capacity to handle 12 million passengers annually. Upon completion of all four development phases, the airport will be able to cater to 70 million passengers per year. Commenting on the partnership, Praveer Sinha, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director of Tata Power, said, “Tata Power is proud to partner with Noida International Airport to pioneer renewable energy integration. This collaboration will support the development of Net Zero Airports, serving millions of Indians and accelerating the country’s path towards a greener future.” Christoph Schnellmann, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Noida International Airport, said, “By sourcing more than half of our energy needs from renewable sources, we are taking decisive action toward a more sustainable future. This agreement reflects our long-term vision for Noida International Airport to become a leader in environmentally conscious airport operations.” Tata Power’s approach—from investment to project execution, trading facilitation, and long-term O&M services—enables tailored, sustainable energy solutions that ensure reliability and efficiency at every project stage. Two PPAs related to wind and solar power supply were signed in New Delhi in the presence of Sanjay Banga, President of Transmission and Distribution at Tata Power; Deepesh Nanda, CEO & MD of Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd., Tarun Katiyar, CEO of Tata Power Trading Company Ltd., Christoph Schnellmann, CEO of Noida International Airport, Nicolas Schenk, Chief Development Officer of Noida International Airport; and other senior officials from both companies.
