Tata Power, DGPC Forge Partnership For Clean Energy in Bhutan

In a move towards regional energy cooperation, India’s integrated power company Tata Power has partnered with Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation Ltd. (DGPC) to develop 5,000 MW of clean energy capacity. This collaboration aims to bolster energy security and accelerate the transition to sustainable energy across South Asia.

Key Highlights of the Collaboration

• Strengthening Bhutan’s Renewable Energy Goals

This agreement supports Bhutan’s vision of achieving 25,000 MW of energy capacity by 2040. It focuses on diversifying energy sources by incorporating solar and geothermal energy alongside hydropower. Consequently, these projects will contribute to regional energy integration, economic growth, and a stronger energy portfolio for Bhutan.

• Phased Development of Renewable Projects

Under the partnership, renewable energy projects will be developed in phases, including 4,500 MW of hydropower and 500 MW of solar energy. As a result, Bhutan’s energy infrastructure will improve significantly, positioning the country as a regional energy hub.

• Shared Vision for Regional Growth

Moreover, the collaboration reflects a shared vision supported by the governments of Bhutan and India. Tata Power’s extensive experience, combined with DGPC’s dedication, will help unlock Bhutan’s energy potential and fast-track progress toward sustainable energy goals.

Building on a Legacy of Cooperation

This initiative extends the long-standing relationship between Tata Power and DGPC, which began with the 126 MW Dagachhu Hydropower Plant in 2008. Additionally, Tata Power’s 1,200 km Tala transmission line continues to facilitate power exports from Bhutan to India.

Hydropower remains a cornerstone of Bhutan’s economy, while India’s renewable energy investments are steadily increasing.
