Tamil Nadu Poised to Add 25 GW Wind Capacity by 2030: GWEC

As per a report by Global Wind Energy Capacity Council (GWEC), Tamil Nadu has the potential to add 25 GW of new wind capacity by 2030. With an existing installed capacity of close to 9 GW, the state does have plans in the pipeline for a further 13 GW already by 2030.

The roadmap developed by GWEC with SED Fund and Deloitte estimates that this capacity addition would pave the way for investment worth billions of dollars of investment while also creating more than 100,000 jobs.

Further, the report states that having an enabling policy in place that keeps pace with Tamil Nadu’s wind potential could help transform it into a key investment destination in all of Asia. That apart, it would also add green-impetus into the state’s economy.

As per the finding of the report, wind energy claims a large part of the renewable energy potential of the state, which is 84%. Currently, Tamil Nadu makes up close to a quarter of the installed wind power capacity in India.

The CEO of Global Wind Energy Council Ben Backwell said, “Tamil Nadu has already set benchmarks for the rest of India and become a focal point for the wind industry in Asia. This roadmap identifies high-impact and concrete opportunities to further increase the demand and supply of wind energy in the state, which would also further strengthen the state’s position in the regional wind industry.”

For another one of the wind major projects that are to come up in Tamil Nadu, global bids have been floated for offshore wind capacity worth 4 GW.
