Surat Hazira NH6 Commissions 180 kW Solar Power Plant

In a positive sign of how things are changing on the ground, Surat Hazira NH-6 Tollway Pvt. Ltd. has achieved a significant milestone  with the commissioning of a 180 kilowatt (kW) solar power plant at the Mandal Toll Plaza .

The solar power plant is expected to generate 2.26 lakh units of electricity annually, effectively reducing 185 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Equipped with bi-directional electricity meters, the plant enables the Mandal Toll Plaza to efficiently manage energy usage and contribute surplus energy back to the grid managed by Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Limited (DGVCL).

Dr Vipin Garg (IAS), Collector & District Magistrate of Tapi District, inaugurated the Solar Power Plant in the presence of dignitaries and senior officials yesterday, July 2. The inauguration ceremony was graced by Sanjay Kumar Yadav, Project Director NHAI, R.R. Borad (GAS), Residential Additional Collector Tapi; P.K. Patel (GAS), Dy. Collector & SDM Vyara and Smt Naliniben Champaneria, Mamlatdar & Executive Magistrate, Songadh, District Tapi.

Dr Vipin Garg (IAS), Collector & District Magistrate of Tapi District said “The solar power plant at the Mandal Toll Plaza marks a major stride in our commitment to sustainability. Gujarat, a state blessed with abundant sunshine throughout the year, has a tremendous opportunity to be a frontrunner in generating and utilising clean, renewable solar energy. This project goes beyond just reducing our environmental impact. By adopting solar power, Surat Hazira NH-6 Tollway Pvt. Ltd. is promoting energy independence, creating a more sustainable future for our communities, and setting a positive example for others. We are committed to continuously exploring and implementing renewable energy solutions with partners.”

It is also a great example of better utilisation of toll plazas, as India’s road transport network continues to expand and be modernised by the central and state level governments. Toll plazas, while being an unfortunate necessity for now, occupy space that can always be utilised better with solar power generation alongside, to help power not just their functions but perhaps, even EV charging stations very soon.
