Spain’s Push For Solar Manufacturing With €210 million Funding

Under the NextGenEU initiative, Spain’s Ministry of Ecological Transition (MITECO) has awarded more than €210 million in funding to seven solar PV manufacturing projects. Called the RENOVAL programme,  it is being managed by the Institute for Diversification and Energy Saving (IDAE in Spanish). It announced the results last week.

The funds will be provided through Spain’s recovery and resilience plan (PRTR) under NextGenEU, which targets specific manufacturing initiatives in the cleantech space, including solar, wind, batteries and green hydrogen.

In total, nearly €300 million has been allocated to 34 projects for renewables manufacturing. One of the seven solar PV manufacturing projects received two-thirds of all the funding. Wind energy firm Vestas also qualified for support. Leading firms in Spain that are involved in Solar manufacturing and have got significant support include

  • European Solar Cell Company, S.L. – Based in Bembibre, León, this company focuses on producing solar cells and modules.
  • Sunwafe SL – Located in Gijón, Asturias, they are establishing a solar ingot and wafer factory, a critical component in the solar value chain.
  • MCPV Manufacturing Spain, S.L. – Operating in Tudela, Navarra, they are working on large-scale solar photovoltaic manufacturing. The Dutch parent is into HJT manufacturing through a plant in the Netherlands.

Solar ingot and wafer manufacturer startup Sunwafe has been allocated nearly €200 million for the construction of a PV manufacturing plant in the northern region of Asturias. According to the company’s website, it aims to build a wafer manufacturing plant with a 20GW annual nameplate capacity by 2030.

Dutch solar research and innovation platform SolarNL’s subsidiary has been awarded with nearly €10 million for the construction of a module assembly plant in Navarra, northern Spain.

Escelco has received funding for expanding its operational capacity in León, by way of a €1.3 million.

The European push to build a solar manufacturing base remains a project that is very much up in the air, considering the many disadvantages European firms face on the cost front.
