Sembcorp Bags 180MW Wind Power Project in Karnataka from SECI

Singapore-headquartered Sembcorp Industries’ wholly owned subsidiary in India has been formally awarded a 180-megawatt (MW) wind power project in the 11th nationwide wind power auction held recently.

The letter of award from Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) for the project has been received by Sembcorp’s renewables subsidiary Green Infra Wind Energy Limited. The project is proposed to be situated in Karnataka. Upon completion of the project, its power output will be sold to SECI under a 25-year long-term power purchase agreement.

SECI is a company of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, established to facilitate the implementation of the National Solar Mission. It is the only Central Public Sector Undertaking dedicated to the solar energy sector.

Sembcorp in 2020 completed the commissioning of 800MW of wind projects won from the first three SECI bids. With the win of 180MW wind power project, Sembcorp’s total capacity of installed and under construction renewable energy assets in India is more than 2.3 gigawatts (GW).

With this win, Sembcorp Industries the Singapore parent Company of the Sembcorp India now has a renewables portfolio of more than 3.5GW in operation and under development across Singapore, China, India, Vietnam, and the UK.

Sembcorp, a leading energy and urban solutions provider, plans to transform its portfolio from brown to green, including increasing its renewable energy capacity – by almost four times- to 10 GW by 2025 from 2.6 GW in 2020.

To support the global energy transition and sustainable development, Sembcorp aims to grow profit contribution from its sustainable solutions portfolio from a current 40% to 70% by 2025. By 2025, its renewable energy portfolio is targeted to achieve a compounded annual growth rate of 30% and its integrated urban solutions portfolio a CAGR of 10%.
