Renewable Energy Industry Creates 5 Lakh New Jobs Globally By Zulkarnain/ Updated On Tue, May 8th, 2018 In a recent report published by International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) titled ‘Renewable Energy and Jobs – Annual Review’, it says the 10 million mark was surpassed for the first time as the industry gave jobs to around 10.3 million in 2017. In a steep growth in 2017, renewable energy industry created over 500,000 new jobs globally. The rise in job creation in 2017 is 5.3% higher than that of in 2016. In a recent report published by International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) titled ‘Renewable Energy and Jobs – Annual Review’, it says the 10 million mark was surpassed for the first time as the industry gave jobs to around 10.3 million in 2017. The report further ads that China, Brazil, the US, India and Japan are the largest renewable energy employers in the industry. The share of job creation in of these countries stand at 70% of the total jobs created. Also around 60% of these jobs were located in Asia. Of the total jobs created in the industry the solar photovoltaic sector has taken the largest share in job creation. It created around 3.4 million jobs across the world which is 9% increase as compared to 2016. The total installation in 2017 stood at record 94GW. According to the report, China accounted for two-thirds of solar PV jobs in 2017, estimated at around 2.2 million by IRENA. Japan and the US were the next-biggest employers in the sector, with India and Bangladesh completing the top five. “Renewable energy has become a pillar of low-carbon economic growth for governments all over the world, a fact reflected by the growing number of jobs created in the sector,” says Director General of IRENA Adnan Amin. “Fundamentally, this data supports our analysis that decarbonisation of the global energy system can grow the global economy and create up to 28 million jobs in the sector by 2050.” Tags: Bangladesh, Director General of IRENA Adnan Amin., India, International, International Renewable Energy Agency, IRENA, Renewable Energy, Renewable Energy and Jobs – Annual Review, solar photovoltaic sector
