Reliance Announces 10 GW Solar Line Commissioning

Reliance Announces 10 GW Solar Line Commissioning Reliance To Boost Solar Manufacturing, AI-Led Green Data Centers

Reliance Industries has commissioned its first line for manufacturing of solar panels and is on track to build battery storage production facilities, the firm said in an investor presentation after its Q4 results announcement. The firm had gone with HJT based technology for Module production, leaning on technology from its acquisition of REC. The line has been cited to be 10 GW, which can be expanded modularly to 20 GW when required.

Reliance is building ‘giga factories’ on a 5,000-acre site at Jamnagar in Gujarat, which will produce photovoltaic (PV) modules, batteries, hydrogen electrolyser and fuel cells.  After announcing a $10 billion investment plan for its foray into new energy, the firm had gone ahead and acquired/picked up stakes in a slew of firms in the sector, both in India and abroad. While Sterling and Wilson Solar was the most notable firm where it picked a significant promoter stake in the EPC firm, the firm’s purchases of Sodium ion startup Faradion, besides solar PV maker REC was equally notable. Besides these, it has also picked up stakes in Nexwafe, a firm targeting a sharply lower manufacturing cost for solar wafers.

Reliance has picked up key PLI incentive driven allocations, in Solar PV manufacturing as well as in Energy storage of battery making. The firm has not really been on schedule with its announcements so far, falling well behind on the start of solar manufacturing operations, even as its battery plans also progress towards the targeted 30 GWh capacity from an initial size of 20 GWh.

The firm claims to have access to land and transmission to generate 150 billion units of electricity , with land identified in the Kutch region of Gujarat. That would indicate movement soon on the firm of its large solar projects for captive use.

The firm has announced a net zero plan for 2035.
