Days after the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) increased its subsidies for Residential Rooftop Solar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced a dedicated scheme to boost the sector. Modi named the scheme ‘Pradhanmantri Suryodaya Yojana’. As per the announcement of the Prime Minister, under this scheme, the Indian government would target to install rooftop solar on one crore households.

Today, on the auspicious occasion of , my resolution got further strengthened that the people of India should have their own solar roof top system on the roof of their houses. The first decision I have taken after returning from Ayodhya is that our government will launch “” with the target of installing rooftop solar on 1 crore houses. This will not only reduce the electricity bill of the poor and middle class, but will also make India self-reliant in the energy sector,” Modi said in a post on X.

Background of rooftop solar in India

Before the announcment of the new scheme by Modi, the ministry few days ago had issued a notification to increase the subsidies for residential rooftop solar to Rs 18,000 per kw. Later, the ministry also issued notification to simplify the process of rooftop solar installation. This comes at a time when the rooftop solar installations in the past have failed to meet its target.

In ministry started the first phase of Rooftop Solar Scheme in 2015. It later revised the scheme after it failed to gather enough pace. Lockdowns in 2019 also slowed down the installations. As per the latest revised rooftop solar programme of the MNRE, the ministry has planned to boost the deployment of rooftop solar till 2026.

As per the latest statistics from the MNRE, the total capacity of grid-connected rooftop solar in India stand at around 11.08 Gigawatt (GW).
