Ola Electric has kickstarted the establishment of what is set to be India’s biggest Gigafactory. The gigafactory, which is to come up in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu, will begin with an initial capacity of 5 GWh and later, expand to 100 GWh in  a phase-wise manner. The firm has set sights on beginning operations by next year.

Bhavish Aggarwal, Founder and CEO, Ola Electric said “This is a proud moment for us as we installed the first pillar of our Gigafactory today. Our Gigafactory will be a major milestone in India’s electrification journey, bringing us closer to making India a global EV hub.” The Founder took to his social media and announced, “Ola will setup the worlds largest EV hub with integrated 2W, Car and Lithium cell Gigafactories in Tamil Nadu. ” This was after Ola entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government on Tamil Nadu aiming at the manufacturing expansion of its two-wheelers, four-wheelers and battery cells. The partnership sets sights on developing an EV hub.

The firm recently invested $920m in the manufacture of cell, battery technology and electric vehicles in Tamil Nadu. Presently, it also boasts of a research and development centre in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

Tamil Nadu has emerged as a hotspot for EV manufacturers. Several manufacturers have set up manufacturing facilities in the state, that has a favourable EV policy. Firms such as Renault and Nissan have a stronghold in the state.
