NTPC Signs MoU with Ladakh For Country’s First Green Hydrogen Mobility Project

NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd. (REL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Union Territory of Ladakh to set up the country’s first Green Hydrogen Mobility project.

NTPC REL, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC, announced that this MoU will enable it to help Ladakh develop a carbon-free economy based on renewable sources and green hydrogen. This makes Leh the first-ever city in the country to have a green hydrogen-based mobility project.

NTPC broke the news through its Twitter handle, tweeting,

The MoU was signed in the presence of Governor R K Mathur, government dignitaries, officials, and public representatives. According to a statement, the occasion was also marked by the inauguration of NTPC’s first solar installations in Leh in the form of solar trees and a solar carport.

Mr. Mathur yesterday inaugurated two solar trees in Civil Secretariat, Leh, installed by NTPC REL, that are capable of generating around 10-20 k units of green electricity in a year. He also thanked the CMD of NTPC, Mr. Gurdeep Singh, for coming up with the Green Hydrogen Project in such a short period post their last meeting in January this year.

NTPC has been aggressively deploying hydrogen-based zero-emission mobility options in recent time. Earlier this month, NTPC announced that its subsidiary NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd (NVVN) had floated a tender for the deployment of hydrogen fuel cell buses in Delhi and Leh.

Before that, NTPC issued a global Expression of Interest (EOI) tender to set up two Hydrogen fuel cell-based pilot projects in its premises only. One of the two is a standalone fuel cell-based backup power system and the other is a standalone fuel cell-based microgrid system with hydrogen production that uses an electrolyzer at NTPC premises.

NTPC has been making headlines for a few weeks now as it has has set a target to install 60 Gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity by 2032. India’s largest power producer is also aiming at a 10 percent reduction in net energy intensity by 2032. It is one out of few global organizations to announce its Energy Compact Goals
