NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) recently announced the development of Green Hydrogen project and its derivatives (Green Ammonia, Green Methanol) with the Maharashtra government. The project is expected to generate up to 1 million ton capacity per annum. Some other projects that have been planned to develop include Pump Hydro Projects (PHP) of 2 GW and the development of renewable energy (RE) projects with or without storage of up to 5 GW in the state.

The NTPC announced the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing between the Maharashtra government and NGEL. It stated, “The projects include the development of Green Hydrogen project and its derivatives (Green Ammonia, Green Methanol). It is expected to be of up to 1 million ton capacity per annum. It included Pump Hydro Projects of 2 GW and development of renewable energy (RE) projects with or without storage up to 5 GW in the state.”

NGEL is a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC and aims to be the flag bearer of NTPC’s Renewable Energy journey with an operational capacity of over 3.4 GW and 26 GW in the pipeline including 7 GW under implementation. The MoU was exchanged on 29th January 2024 between Mohit Bhargava, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), NGEL and Narayan Karad, Deputy Secretary (Energy), Maharashtra government in the presence of the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and other senior officials.

The above MoU has been signed as a part of the ‘Green Investment Plan’ of the Maharashtra government in the next five years and envisages a potential investment of approximately ₹ 80,000 Crore. NTPC is in the path of building up an RE capacity of 60 GW by 2032.

Earlier this year, NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) issued a global tender seeking bids from manufacturing companies. The renewable arm of the NTPC said that applicants dealing with the manufacturing of products used in the generation and storage of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives could apply.

NTPC Green wants to rope in such firms to set up a manufacturing hub at a proposed industrial park at Pudimadaka in Andhra Pradesh. The Indian public utility said it owns a premium land parcel of 1200 acres at Pudimadaka in Andhra Pradesh, which plans to develop as an industry hub/green energy manufacturing hub.

NGEL has planned to develop the land into a mega hydrogen hub with two major components–1) a part of the land to be used for setting up the Green Hydrogen plant, Green Ammonia plant and its other derivatives. ii) Another part of land identified to be developed as a manufacturing hub for Green hydrogen and its derivatives-related equipment and technologies (including its storage).
