NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), the renewable arm of the NTPC Group, has successfully commissioned its Shajapur Solar Project in Madhya Pradesh. The newly-listed company announced the milestone in a recent stock exchange filing, marking another step in its mission to expand India’s renewable energy capacity.

On November 29, NTPC Green began commercial operations for Unit-I of the project, adding 55 MW of solar capacity out of the total 105 MW planned. With this addition, NTPC Limited’s total installed capacity across renewable and thermal power sources has reached an impressive 76,530.68 MW, solidifying its position as one of India’s largest power producers.

NTPC Green’s Focus on Solar Energy Projects

As a significant player in India’s renewable energy sector, NTPC Green recently made its stock market debut through an Initial Public Offering (IPO), targeting ₹75,000 million to fund its green initiatives. The company’s project portfolio is predominantly solar-focused, contributing significantly to India’s clean energy transition.

By September 2024, NTPC Green reported an operational capacity of 3,220 MW in solar projects and 100 MW in wind energy. Additionally, it has secured contracts and awards for 10.57 GW of solar projects and 3 GW of wind projects.

In total, NTPC Green manages 16,896 MW of renewable energy projects, combining operational, contracted, and awarded capacities. This includes 13.79 GW of solar energy projects and 3.10 GW of wind energy, showcasing its leadership in India’s renewable energy landscape.

NTPC Limited’s Renewable Energy Expansion

NTPC Limited, India’s largest power producer and a designated Renewable Energy Implementing Agency (REIA), continues to explore innovative renewable energy solutions. The company is involved in ground-mounted solar farms, floating solar installations, rooftop solar systems, and wind energy projects, positioning itself at the forefront of India’s clean energy revolution.

India’s Path to Net-Zero with NTPC

As India pushes toward achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 and aims for 50% of its total power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, NTPC is playing a pivotal role in this transition. The Power Minister’s proposal to bundle renewable energy with thermal power places NTPC at the heart of India’s efforts to diversify its energy mix and accelerate the adoption of sustainable power sources.
