NTPC Allocates 5 GW to Green Hydrogen, Ammonia from its 2032 RE Targets

State-owned power provider NTPC anticipates the employment of 5 GW of its 60 GW green portfolio objective by 2032 in the green hydrogen and ammonia market, according to Mohit Bhargava, Chief Executive Director of NTPC REL.

 As far as the hydrogen business is concerned, NTPC has already launched three pilot projects. One is based in Leh, where it is operating hydrogen-based fuel cell buses and installing a green hydrogen filling station alongside solar power plants.

By July or August of next year, it is anticipated that this project will get underway. At its Kawas facility in Gujarat, the other pilot combines renewable hydrogen and natural gas, and it is anticipated to be put into service this month. At its Vindhyachal plant in Madhya Pradesh, the third pilot involves combining hydrogen and carbon capture.

At the end of July 2022, the NTPC Group has 69,134 MW of installed power generation capacity, including 56,800 MW of coal-based capacity, 6,400 MW of gas-based capacity, 3,700 MW of hydropower capacity, and 2,000 MW of capacity based on renewable energy.

Gurdeep Singh, the Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC, stated that the company plans to make a strong push in the renewable energy sector and repurpose its current coal-based plants at a recent event.

According to a report, NTPC is also working to bring in a strategic investor for its subsidiary NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL). The massive power company intends to transfer its whole portfolio of renewable energy to the newly created NGEL.
