NDMC Set To Procure 200MW Solar Energy From SECI

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), has decided to procure 200MW of solar power to transition to renewable energy sources in the region. The project will be executed in collaboration with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). The discom serving NDMC areas in New Delhi is Tata Power DDL.

This project aligns with NDMC’s goal of shifting to 100% renewable energy sources by the end of 2025. To supply the energy, the project set the ceiling for such power procurement at Rs 2.68 per kilowatt-hour (KwH), which complies with the Ministry of Power’s guidelines.

NDMC member, Kuljeet Singh Chahal said, “The council has arranged for 525 MW per day from various sources, including solar, hydro, and other plants. The maximum power demand in NDMC during summer is 450 MW per day, with peak consumption of 425 MW in June.”

The corporation procures 100 MW from the Delhi governments Bawana and Himadri plants of Pragati Power Corporation Limited and 11 MW from its own solar systems. Furthermore, the plants installed at 1,100 rooftops of govt buildings like 23 municipal schools, NDMC as well as CPWD buildings, 55 MW is procured through SJVN. NDMC also included 55 MW which is to be procured from hydro plants including gas and thermal units of the Ministry of Power. Further, they also plan to procure 200 MW from another central public sector undertaking (PSU).

With the smallest area within Delhi in its control, comprising mostly central government owned offices and buildings, besides prestigious  buildings belonging to the global diplomatic community, NDMC is expected to be the torch bearer of positive steps to make the capital clean and green, and this move is no surprise. If anything, there is a strong case for sharing of knowledge and experience across the Delhi municipal bodies, and discoms as well, as NDMC areas are served by a separate discom as well, Tata Power DDL.
