Navalt, an eco-marine tech firm that specializes in the manufacturing of solar electric vessels, has released its solar-electric boat, the Barracuda at Mazagon Dock in Maharashtra. This is said to be one of the fastest solar-electric boats in India.

The solar electric boat works on optional plug and charge, operated on a solar capacity of 6kWp. It can carry up to ten passengers. Powered by a solar-electric propulsion system, the Barracuda claims to significantly reduce emissions, as its propulsion is purely electric. It boasts twin 50 kW motors, complemented by an 88-kWh battery bank. It operates on a maximum speed of 12 knots and a range of 50 km. The solar electric boat operates on a range of 7 hours in a single charge, It entails a marine-grade LFP battery,

The vessel will be called ‘Saur Shakthi’.

In August, the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) and MPUVNL (Madhya Pradesh Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd), joined hands for the classification and certification of solar-electric boats. The agreement looks to review technical specifications and conduct inspection at the time of construction, and certification of material, components, and equipment for the solar-electric boats. Additionally, IRS will be responsible to offer additional technical services including the review of documents as well as providing training to MPUVNL personnel.

Several states are already operating solar electric boats and boats powered by renewable energy. In the Chilika Lake of Odisha, solar-electric boasts have replaced machine boats. The Kerala state government has also planned to convert 50 percent of the total boats into solar boats.
