Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has now launched the Nagaland Solar Mission, a state-level initiative aimed at accelerating the adoption of residential rooftop solar power systems. The programme is aligned with the central government’s PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and seeks to make clean energy more accessible and affordable for households across the state.

The launch took place at the Chief Minister’s Office in Kohima in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Y. Patton, Power Minister K.G. Kenye, Chief Secretary J. Alam, and other senior state officials.

Rs 10 crore allocation

Rio announced that an allocation of ₹10 crore has been earmarked for the Solar Mission in the financial year 2025–26. He called the initiative a major step towards promoting green energy, reducing electricity costs, and advancing environmental sustainability.

“The initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to building a sustainable and energy-efficient future,” he said.

On social media, the Chief Minister added that the state government would supplement the central subsidy by offering additional state-level incentives. Under the scheme, beneficiaries will receive up to 96% subsidy for solar systems up to 2 kilowatts and 85% for systems up to 3 kilowatts, significantly lowering the cost for residents.

India’s rooftop solar gains momentum

India’s rooftop solar capacity has now reached 17 gigawatts, according to the latest data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The figures signal renewed momentum in the sector, nearly a year after the launch of the PM Surya Ghar scheme.

At the time of the scheme’s launch, cumulative rooftop solar capacity stood at around 11 GW. The subsequent growth reflects the impact of simplified processes and increased subsidies under the programme, aimed at accelerating adoption across residential and commercial segments.

Among states, Gujarat leads with 5.1 GW of installed rooftop solar capacity, followed by Maharashtra at 3.2 GW. Rajasthan holds third place with 1.5 GW, while Kerala and Tamil Nadu follow with 1.1 GW and 0.93 GW, respectively.
