Mingyang Rolls Out World’s Largest Offshore Wind Turbine of 18 MW By Namrata Gulati Sapra/ Updated On Thu, Dec 14th, 2023 Highlights : MySE 18.X-20 MW has a yearly generation capacity of 80 million kWh in Eastern Guangdong, and can power 96,000 households. It can reduce carbon emissions by 66,000 tonnes. Chinese Wind Manufacturer Mingyang Stakes Claim To Largest Wind Turbine The largest wind turbine manufacturer in the world, China-based Mingyang Smart Energy has rolled out its 18 MW offshore wind turbine at its manufacturing base Shanwei. MySE 18.X-20 MW, is now the world’s largest offshore wind turbine with reference to capacity and rotor diameter. Features The turbine boasts flexible power ratings varying from 18.X to 20MW. The rotor diameters spread to 260-292m. The firm added that the 18 MW turbine promises modularity, lightweight design, high efficiency and reliability. The newest offering is an evolution from Mingyang’s 14-16 MW platforms. MySE 18.X-20 MW has a yearly generation capacity of 80 million kWh in Eastern Guangdong, and can power 96,000 households. It can reduce carbon emissions by 66,000 tonnes. Earlier in July, Mingyang had operationalized MySE 16-260, which was then the world’s largest offshore wind turbine. Chinese Manufactucturers Flex Muscle In Wind Energy Too With 60% Market Share Also Read Battling high wind speeds The Mingyang turbine has been designed for typhoon-prone regions, where the wind speeds are medium-to-high. This has been achieved by integrating anti-typhoon technology, which can withstand the severest levels of typhoon. In September, Goldwind installed its wind turbine GWH252-16MW at the Zhangpu Liuao offshore wind farm. The turbine produced 384.1 MWh in a day, thereby a new world record for an individual wind turbine in 24 hours. The power was produced when the wind farm was confronting wind speeds of up to 23.56 metres per second (around 85 kilometres per hour) because of the typhoon ‘Haiku’. In what is likely to be seen as a key milestone for Chinese Wind Energy manufacturing, Mingyang Smart Energy Group, a Chinese maker of wind power equipment, said it has shipped its turbine generator system to Nyuzen-machi Offshore Wind Farm, the first Japanese offshore wind power project to use turbines made in China.
