Mechanical Department of NIT-K Dedicates Rooftop for Solar Research By Saur News Bureau/ Updated On Mon, Dec 4th, 2017 The newly inaugurated building will be transformed into a research lab for solar energy, said Ajay Kumar from mechanical department The rooftop solar energy plant built at the mechanical department of NIT-K, Surathkal, will be dedicated to research and the generated electricity will be supplied to run the electronic gadgets of the building. The rooftop has recently received a vertical extension. Director, National Institute of Technology- Karnataka, Surathkal, Karanam Uma Maheshwar Rao inaugurated the new building. The newly inaugurated building will be transformed into a research lab for solar energy, said Ajay Kumar from mechanical department. The re-commissioning of equipments will take place on the huge rooftop. Researches, as to how the efficacy of the solar energy be enhanced to use it for commercial purpose in later phases, he added. Professor and head department of mechanical engineering, Narendranath S, said that currently there are about 500 UG students, 140 PG students and around 100 research scholars. The new infrastructure would facilitate faculty and students in their academic and research work. “With modern facilities and state-of-the-art labs, our aim is to reach to the levels IITs,” emphasised Uma Maheshwar Rao.
