Masen Initiates Prequalification Tender for Third Phase of Solar Power Project in Atlas Mountains By Saur News Bureau/ Updated On Fri, Aug 11th, 2023 Highlights : Prequalification documents need to be submitted by October 20th, for 400 MW Noor Midelt III project utilizing PV technology US On Course For Record 32 GW Solar Capacity Additions in 2023 Morocco’s renewable energy agency, Masen, has kickstarted a prequalification tender for the third phase of a solar power venture. The project is situated in the Atlas mountains. Developers are required to submit prequalification documents by October 20th, with the objective of financing, constructing, and operating the 400 megawatt (MW) Noor Midelt III project utilizing photovoltaic (PV) technology. In 2019, Masen had designated a consortium led by EDF Renouvelables (EDF Renewables) to oversee the inaugural phase, Noor Midelt I, which integrates both PV and concentrated solar power (CSP) technology, boasting an 800 MW capacity. Nevertheless, the project encountered delays, partly due to disputes surrounding CSP technology implementation. Just recently, Masen revealed the prequalification of six consortiums vying to develop the second phase, Noor Midelt II. This stage envisions the establishment of a PV plant with two-hour storage capacity, designed for 400 MW output. Morocco achieved 18 per cent of its actual electricity production from renewable sources in 2022, with coal constituting the remainder. The nation aspires to elevate its renewable installed power capacity to 52 per cent by 2030, up from the current 40 per cent. Through the launch of this prequalification tender for the third phase of the solar project, Morocco demonstrates its ongoing commitment to advancing its renewable energy sector, aligning with its ambitious long-term objectives.
