Africa Releases Its Largest Renewable Energy Tender with 3,740 MW Capacity Kenya Electricity Generation Company (KenGen), which is a power utility owned by the State, has revealed that it has planned 3000 MW of renewable energy to the national over the span of the decade. Currently, KenGen has an installed capacity of 1,904 MW. It will look into tapping another 10,000 MW of clean energy. “The Board approved a ten-year corporate strategy last year and we are now ready to roll it out in this new year 2023 having developed a robust implementation plan to lead us in the next frontier of our business growth,” said Managing Director and CEO, Abraham Serem. He also said in the same breath that the current power plants will be upgraded towards this end to make them more efficient. Kenya has notably expanded its portfolio of renewable energy. In fact, as of 2022, more than 75 per cent of its electricity needs were met from renewable sources. Kenya boasts of strong solar output along with strong prospects for wind energy because of the favourable geology. Consequently, it is also attracting interest from foreign investors in the renewable space, especially for rural electrification. Kenya also has been accelerating its efforts with regards to the development of renewable energy and making investments in leading technologies. In Africa, Kenya boasts of the highest claim of renewable energy in energy mix.
