Delhi-based central university Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has signed an MoU with Sunsource Energy to set-up a 2.50 MWP capacity Solar Photo Voltaic (SPV) plant in its campus for its own consumption. “Taking a lead among Central Universities, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has is all set to have the largest rooftop solar plant for which it has signed an MoU with Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) approved company, Sunsource Energy Pvt Ltd,” said JMI in a statement. As per the MoU, the Noida-based company will execute the project on turnkey basis and maintain it for next 25 years under Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model and will supply electricity @ Rs.3.39 per unit for a period of 25 years. The company will install more than 2.50 MWp solar photo voltaic system on RESCO Model at zero cost to the university. JMI said that, the installation of solar panels on the rooftops of various buildings like hostels, central library, schools of Jamia, Engineering faculty and Mass Communication Research Centre will start shortly. Calling it an important initiative by the university, the Vice Chancellor Prof Ahmad said that the idea of using solar energy was mooted about two years back. The step will result in saving not only money that the university spends on its electricity bills but also save the environment and reduce carbon footprint, Prof Ahmad added. He hoped that JMI will soon become a model for other institutions in the implementation of unconventional energy resources. The MoU is in-line with the Central government’s target of installation of 40 GWp grid connected solar rooftop systems in the country by 2022.
