In a fresh development, the energy agency of Italy, Gestore dei Servizi Energetici (GSE), has announced the results of the 9th renewable energy auctions of the country. The agency allocated over 413 MW of capacity for renewable energy projects of over 1 MW in size.

Out of the total RE allocation, the agency awarded over 293 MW of solar capacity that will be spread over 42 locations, each project having size between 1.5 MW to 85.8 MW. It also awarded four wind energy projects having a combined capacity of more than 119 MW.

The successful bidders include Italian renewable energy entities like Acea, foreign players like Sonnedix and also independent special purpose vehicles (SPVs). The discount rate offered by RE developers from the auction ceiling price of €0.065/kWh ranged from 2 to 2.5 per cent. The lowest bid stood at €0.06116/kWh and the highest bid was €0.06124/kWh.

Comparison with Previous Auctions

Data shows that the bids offered in the 9th renewable energy auctions were either higher or at par with the 8th auctions done by GSE. The discount rate in the previous auctions ranged between 2% and 3.02%. The authorities allocated 306 MW of renewable energy in previous auctions that were held in June, 2022. The solar power allocations were 300 MW in that.

The seventh auction took place in January for the allocation of 710 MW of solar power. The sixth auction allocated 297 MW of solar power.

The National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) of Italy obligates that 55 per cent of the country’s power generation must come from renewable energy sources by 2030. The solar energy will have 52 GW solar capacity.

Recently, Sonnedix Power signed a 10-year PPA Statkraft AS to offtake 36GWh and support the development of several solar energy farms which the Sonnedix will develop in central and northern regions of Italy.
