India’s Wind Energy Capacity Touches 48.5 GW

India’s cumulative wind energy capacity has reached 48.5 GW, according to the latest data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). The CEA’s most recent monthly report highlighted the addition of new wind energy capacities, indicating steady growth in the sector.

As per the report, the country added 223 MW of new wind energy capacity in February 2025, bringing the total to 48.58 GW. In the first 11 months of the current financial year (FY25), India added a total of 2,702 MW of new capacity.

Previous Year Installations

A comparison of wind energy capacity additions shows an upward trend in the current financial year. For instance, India added 2,520 MW of wind capacity in the first 11 months of FY24, while during the same period in FY23, the country had added only 1,657 MW. The increase in new wind projects can be attributed to the growing number of hybrid wind-solar projects in the country.

Given the current pace of wind energy deployments and past trends, India is likely to achieve annual wind energy installations of around 3 GW by the end of March 2025.

In 2023-24, India added a total of 3,253 MW of wind energy capacity, compared to 2,274 MW in 2022-23, the CEA reports indicate.

Rise in Tenders and New Projects

With an increasing number of tenders issued by Indian renewable energy implementing agencies such as SECI, NHPC, SJVN, and NTPC, along with the introduction of new formats for renewable project tenders, the wind energy sector in India is witnessing fresh opportunities.

Several companies, including ACME Solar, which previously focused solely on solar energy, have now diversified their portfolios to include hybrid projects. This shift, along with strong support from the government and renewable energy developers, is driving greater wind project installations across the country.
