India’s Renewable Capacity Crosses 200 GW Benchmark By Saur News Bureau/ Updated On Mon, Oct 14th, 2024 Highlights : In terms of percentage, India’s solar power additions grew by 681 percent in September on a Year-on-Year (YoY) basis. On the hand, India’s wind energy capacity increased by 81 percent. India's Renewable Capacity Crosses 200 GW Benchmark India’s renewable energy capacity has now crossed 200 GW, latest data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) revealed. As per the latest information from the agency, India’s total renewable capacity (excluding large hydro) touched 154 GW while India’s large hydro projects touched 46 GW capacity by the end of September 2024. A comparison of CEA’s monthly installed capacity reported revealed that India added a total of 1.3 GW of solar capacity in the month of September. During the same time period, the country added 170.59 MW of wind energy capacity. It also added 5 MW of small hydro projects and 369 MW of biomass/cogeneration capacities. As per the official figures, India now has a total of 90 GW of solar energy, 47.36 GW of wind energy and 46.92 GW of large hydro projects. With the addition of the new green capacities India’s total electricity capacity has touched 452 GW. India’s total renewable installed capacity now has touched 34 percent of its total electricity capacity. On the other hand, its total non-fossil fuel capacity has touched 44 percent, the CEA report indicated. Yearly comparison A comparison from the last year revealed in September 2024, the pace of installations was higher. For example-in September 2024, India added 1.3 GW of solar power, while during the same period in 2023, the country added only 170 MW. Similarly, during September 2024, India added 170.59 MW of wind energy, however during the same period in 2023, the country was able to add only 94 MW of wind energy. In terms of percentage, India’s solar power additions grew by 681 percent in September on a Year-on-Year (YoY) basis. On the hand, India’s wind energy capacity increased by 81 percent.
