The Indian markets were marked by a bullish undertone today, as most indices were in the green, lifting the green pack as well. But it is instructive to note that one of the largest firms in the pack, Waaree Energies, slumped today.
So what is one supposed to make of the upmove today? For one, there is good news on the macro front, with key indicators like GST collections showing healthy growth. But perhaps the news that has worked like the proverbial rain to damp down air pollution is the news of healthy growth in electricity demand, finally. After months of anaemic demand that was blamed on everything from bountiful rains to growth pangs at variance with GDP numbers, the December growth at 5.55% is a clear sign of sustainable demand growth for green energy as well.
However, the overhang of price pressure from overcapacity in the solar modules business, something that we believe might be a little overblown, exists. Will that put a lid on future growth and consequently, stock prices? We should know soon enough, but there is every indication that this will be a record year for capacity additions in both solar and wind, and so far, there is nothing to indicate FY27 will be any less. That should reassure investors a little, besides the fact that valuations are a lot more reasonable now.
The one area where policy interventions could help remains the matter of government payments in sectors like solar pumps, of course. Beyond that, as the first of the large BESS projects come online this year, it will be a strong pointer to not just the direction of the sector, but also the pace of it, if BESS prices continue or even maintain current levels.
