It was yet another day for green energy stocks to mount a determined effort to recover the ground they have lost, although one still has to wonder if this one will last. That meant, other than Premier Energies, almost every stock gained during the day with some like Shakti Pumps, Acme Solar, Sterling and Wilson Renewable, and KPI Green making the most of the shift in momentum.
However, the gains or recovery will still be seen as inadequate, considering the significant losses most have suffered. A substantial recovery to those levels will take time, we continue to believe.
At another level, the government seems to be tuned into the challenges for the sector yet again, with a series of moves to make things easier. However, it faces the challenge of balancing out protectionist instincts with the pressure from say, the Trump administration, which might actually end up doing a favor at some stage to developers by forcing India's hand on the tariffs or customs duties front. A selective exemption or lowering for Made In US equipment will have marginal to little impact, while possibly removing a significant risk to exports for manufacturers like Waaree Energies.
For EPCs and developers, sentiment will shift with news not of tender wins, but plant commissionings and signing of PSAs, which has help up a huge amount of awarded tenders, further worrying investors. As we had been saying, more and more listed firms from the sector has also meant a steep learning curve for analysts and market watchers, and one of the biggest learnings is the wide gap award of tenders and actual execution and commissioning.
