Green Stocks April 4: No Respite As US Tariffs Continue To Trip Up markets

After having apparently dodged the worst of the impact from US Tariff announcements today, there was no escaping the impact today. the Indian markets followed most global markets in going for a dive. Markets are clearly digesting the uncertainty of follow on actions on April 9 from the US spreading to more sectors, as well as the long term implications of these tariff wars. Besides the likely impact on consumer sentiment due to inflationary effects, there is also the small matter of the Trump administration’s coolness towards renewable energy, if not climate denialism altogether.

Whether that leads to deeper impact on the US climate transition moves, be it cutting off of IRA credits or backing support for green energy, nothing is off the table with this administration it seems. Whether it will take a contraction in consumer demand or enough feedback from constituents to pull back, only time will tell. But one has to say, for all the anti climate denialism, the Trump administration looks set to do the earth a favour by killing consumer demand in one of the highest consuming markets. Of course, the damage that does to the ‘global trade engine’ and its impact is another matter.

For Indian firms, there is the small matter of the US as the key solar export market to worry about.

On green stocks, while most faced selling pressure and corrected, ironically Gensol Engineering, which has lost 80% from its top since financial troubles that finally paused and ended up in the green, on hopes perhaps of a resolution being close for its troubles. Lets hope for the best, considering the solid portfolio the firm has built up over the years.
