India has now imposed an anti-dumping duty against the imports of solar glass in India. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification, announcing imposing the new curbs. The notification from the ministry said that the duties will be imposed against the imports of solar glass from China and Vietnam.

The latest notification came to the fore after a recommendation of the same from the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR). DGTR, in its preliminary findings, found several Chinese and Vietnamese solar glass manufacturers dumping ultra-cheap solar glass in India. This allegedly hurt the avenues of Indian solar glass manufacturers like Borosil Renewables and others.

Based on DGTR Recommendations

The latest notification from the Department of Revenue of the ministry said that the provisional imposition of ant-dumping duty will be applicable for six months. The notification also cited the recommendations of the DGTR for imposing such curbs.

The latest notification said that the DGTR investigation revealed that solar glass was exported to India from these two countries at dumped prices. It also found an increase in imports of solar glass from these countries in both absolute terms and in relation to production and consumption. DGTR also had said that the material injury suffered by the Indian solar glass industry was due to the dumped imports from these countries.

Impact on the Indian solar market

The imposition of these duties is set to give the Indian solar glass makers a level playing field. In India, the companies that are into the manufacturing of solar glass include-Borosil Renewables, Gobind Glass & Industries, Triveni Renewables, Vishakha Glass, and Gold Plus Float Glass.

The whole verdict came to the limelight after Borosil Renewables approached DGTR alleging the dumping of solar glass. It demanded the imposition of such duties. This came after the company suffered losses due to stiff competition from such ultra-cheap imports, which made Borosil Renewables tough to fight the price war.
