India’s renewable energy capacity reached 152.65 GW by the end of August 2024, according to the latest data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The data highlights new solar and wind energy project additions during the month.

In August alone, India added 2,224 MW (2.22 GW) of solar capacity and 116.9 MW of wind energy capacity. However, there were no new additions in the biomass/cogeneration segment. The country also added 34 MW of small hydro capacity and 48.21 MW of waste-to-energy projects. These additions raised India’s total renewable energy capacity from 150.27 GW at the end of July to 152.65 GW by the end of August. Overall, 2.38 GW of new renewable energy capacity was added during the month.

Comparison with FY24

When compared to the same period in FY2023-24, solar capacity additions have surged significantly this year. In August 2023, India added only 464.99 MW of solar power, whereas in August 2024, it added 2,224 MW—an increase of 379%.

On the other hand, wind power saw a slowdown. In August 2023, India added 149.6 MW of wind capacity, but this dropped to 116.9 MW in August 2024, marking a 21.8% decrease.

Since April 2024

MNRE data also revealed that since April 2024, India has added 9 GW of new renewable energy capacity in the first five months of FY2024-25. This includes 7.6 GW of new solar capacity and 1.3 GW of new wind capacity.

This comes at a time when the Union government is planning to go net-zero by 2070. On the other the Indian government has also planned to add 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy and increase its dependency on green power. The Indian renewable energy industry is now optimistic of increased solar and wind energy installations in FY2024, buoyed by the increased tenders released by the government and several renewable energy projects in the pipleline.
