IACC Summit: US Reaffirms Commitment To Support India’s Energy Transition By Lakshita Kapoor/ Updated On Wed, Aug 7th, 2024 IACC Summit: US Reaffirms Commitment To Support India’s Energy Transition United States (US) has expressed its strong commitment to supporting India’s ambitious energy transition efforts, said Jonathan Heimer, Minister Counselor for Commercial Affairs at the US Foreign Commercial Service (FCS). He was speaking at the second Energy Summit of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC) in New Delhi. Heimer highlighted the deepening ties between the US and India and the significant opportunities for collaboration in the energy sector. At the event, themed ‘Climate Change and Decarbonization of the Indian Economy – Vision 2030’, Heimer emphasized that American businesses are actively involved in various aspects of India’s energy transition, including solar and wind power, energy storage, and grid modernization. He pointed out that India’s goal to achieve 500 GW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2030 illustrates the country’s leadership ambitions in clean energy. Carrie Antal, Deputy Director of the Indo-Pacific Office at USAID, echoed this sentiment, noting that India’s economic success is drawing international attention. She praised the ongoing collaboration between USAID and India, which has historically focused on green revolutions, public health, and education, and is now extending to sustainable development goals. Upendra Tripathy, a former Secretary at the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), underscored the broad scope for bilateral engagement and knowledge sharing between the two nations. He advocated for addressing diverse energy sectors and balancing mitigation and adaptation efforts. Sunil Jain, Chairman of the Energy Committee at IACC, highlighted the potential of small modular reactors (SMRs) for future energy transitions, suggesting this as a key area for US-India cooperation. Arun Karna of AT&T Global Network Services emphasised the economic benefits of renewable energy, including job creation and technological innovation. Dr. Lalit Bhasin, Immediate Past National President of IACC, called for a balanced approach to tackling climate change while ensuring economic growth in emerging economies like India.
