The Gujarat Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) backs municipalities to establish solar power plants to produce green-clean energy in the state. CM Bhupendra Patel announced, that he has adopted an eco-friendly approach to further strengthen Gujarat’s leadership in the renewable energy sector. He intends to extend it to local self-government institutions through these projects.

Patel has granted in-principle approval for the allocation of ₹45.37 crore from Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Shaheri Vikas Yojana to 32 additional municipalities for the installation of 6.7 MW solar plants at 60 locations. The minister noted, “It’s estimated that utilizing non-conventional energy in the state’s local self-government institutions could lead to a 50 percent reduction in their electricity bills in the future.”

CM Grants In-principle Approval for Solar Projects

The Chief Minister’s office stated, “The CM has given in-principle approval for municipalities to install solar plants at vital infrastructure sites, including sewage treatment plants (STPs), water treatment plants (WTPs), pumping stations, water works, and municipal buildings. So far, ₹114.34 crore has been allocated to 63 municipalities to install solar plants at 136 locations, and 55 municipalities have already completed installations at 97 sites.”

Ease In Open Access Can Support Businesses

An SBI Caps report found that Gujarat offers a cost advantage in providing energy through open access which can support future business.  The report explained: “Key states such as Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu still offer a substantial 20% cost advantage for utilizing open-access renewable power. Furthermore, captive arrangements enhance the economic appeal by exempting consumers from additional surcharges and cross-subsidy levies, thereby maintaining viability across most states. Thus, the residential sector has become one of the largest segments in rooftop solar, especially led by PM-SGMBY and a vibrant ecosystem. Residential rooftop installations may surpass other segments if PM-SGMBY achieves its ambitious 30 GW target.”
