Greece Makes 888 MW Green Additions in H1 2022; Looks to Cross 10 GW Threshold

Greece’s green additions have witnessed a major leap, especially when compared against those made in last year.

Reports confirm that there were 91 MW capacity wind installations from January through June, taking up the total to 4,294 MW. Further, 10 MW in new small hydropower plants were added, augmenting the segment to 249 MW. The combined capacity of new biomass and biogas plants stands at 7 MW in combined capacity, driving the total up to 102 MW. Cogeneration facilities added 10 MW (119 MW).

The cumulative new additions in in the first half stood at 888 MW. Currently, the renewable installations are 9,422 MW.

As per the Minister of Environment and Energy Kostas Skrekas, Greece’s goal for 2022 in new installed renewable energy capacity is to touch a record 2 GW. The country looks to surpass the 10 GW threshold.

Notably, during H1 2022, the additions made by the country in photovoltaics have transcended wind energy. The photovoltaic additions are as of now is the number one renewable source when one looks at installed capacity, with the inclusion of rooftop photovoltaics.

In October this year, Greece revealed that its electric grid operated entirely on 100 per cent renewables- a first for the country.
