The National Power Portal has released its latest report for the renewable capacity that India installed at the close of April 2023. The cumulative installed capacity stood at 125692 MW as on April 30, 2023. Not surprisingly, of this, solar power claims a large chunk of 67077.88 MW, while wind stands at 42868.08 MW.

Notably, of the 125692 MW cumulative capacity, the private sector has been responsible for contributing 121567.88 MW with the central government-owned firms contributing just 1632.30 MW. The state sector claims 2492.11 MW of the total. In the report, it is striking that in the installed renewable energy capacity, the private sector takes the lead while the central government initiatives are lagging behind by a heavy margin. This is especially true for the eastern part of India, where the central government-owned firms have installed just 15.10 MW of capacity as opposed to the private sector, which has installed 1580.02 MW. The state government initiatives, on the other hand, has helped install 283.36 MW of renewable energy.

The story is true for all the parts of India, where the gaps between the capacity installed by central government firms and privately owned firms seems to widen. In the northern part of India, for example, private sector firms installed capacity worth 31996.55 MW with central sector initatives claiming just 379 MW. In the north eastern part, central government initiatives have helped install just 30 MW of capacity with private sector offering a stark contrast at over 264 MW. What also stands out in the report is that central government backed initiatives have been actively contributing to other non-renewable capacities, whether coal, gas or nuclear.
