4 Years On, GoodWe Basks In The Success Of Cochin Airports Solar Project By Saur News Bureau/ Updated On Wed, Jul 27th, 2022 Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) is the world’s first fully solar-powered airport. The eco-friendly initiative of CIAL has won international accolades including “The Champions of the Earth Award-2018” from the United Nations. CIAL claims that it is known for its commitment to the idea of sustainable development which prompts the effective utilization of green energy for all its power requirements. CIAL was an early mover among airports with its green initiatives, starting its first solar initiatives back in 2013, with a 100kWp Pilot Plant. CIAL expanded its solar capacity in phases and attained the status as ‘World’s first Airport to be fully powered by solar energy’ by 2015 with an installed capacity of 13.1MWp. Currently, CIAL has a total installed solar capacity of 50 MWp. Together with its 4.5 MW Hydroelectric power project at Arippara, CIAL is now the 2nd largest power producer in Kerala after KSEB, the state discom. Till date, CIAL has generated more than 25 crores units of green power from various solar PV installations at the airport, reducing the carbon footprint by 1,60,000 Metric tonnes. CIAL’s last 10MWp solar plant at the airport was implemented with 137 nos. of GW60KN-MT, MT-G2 GoodWe inverters. GoodWe claims that its MT series inverters boast of maximum efficiency of up to 99%, aimed at maximizing long-term returns and profitability using advanced topology and innovative control technology.
