GOGLA, IKEA Foundation Announce Partnership To Scale Up RE in Asia

GOGLA, the global association for the off-grid solar energy industry, and the IKEA Foundation have now announced a strategic partnership to scale the productive use of renewable energy (PURE) across Asia and Africa. 

The partnership provides GOGLA with funding of EUR 4 million over four years to help the off-grid solar sector advance solar PURE technologies that can help modernize agriculture, improve food and water security, power micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), and electrify health infrastructure.

The announcement was made during the South Asia Forum for Distributed Energy (SAFDE), held at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi from August 23-24, 2023.

IKEA Foundation has also announced its endorsement of the GOGLA’s Power 1 Billion Lives’ UN Energy Compact, joining over 100 other organizations behind the shared vision of bringing renewable energy to underserved communities. The ‘Power 1 Billion Lives’ Energy Compact is designed to help the off-grid solar sector scale its impact and rapidly provide green, modern energy to 1 billion people by 2030, reaching 190 million with PURE technologies. 

In light of the partnership announcement, Per Heggenes, CEO of IKEA Foundation, said: “The IKEA Foundation is proud to support GOGLA in its mission to scale the productive use of renewable energy across Asia and Africa. Over 750 million people are currently living without access to electricity. Off-grid solar technology can provide them with the tools they need to improve their livelihoods and create jobs, helping to grow and strengthen their local economies.”

Heggenes also added, “The rapid expansion of the off-grid solar sector will also support the world to achieve the ambitions of the Paris Climate Agreement and UN Sustainable Development Goals. For these reasons, the IKEA Foundation is pleased to announce our endorsement of GOGLA’s ‘Compact to Power One Billion Lives by 2030.”
