Global RE Player SSE & Partners Name Scotland’s 2.6 GW Wind Project By Saur News Bureau/ Updated On Fri, Aug 26th, 2022 Highlights : The mega floating offshore wind farm is now called Ossian, an ancient Scottish leader whose sea adventures are recorded in history books. The lease area has average water depths of 72m, which could help wind turbines to deliver up to 2.6 GW energy, enough to power 4.3 million Scottish homes. Global RE player SSE Renewables , along with its ScotWind partners, Marubeni Corporation and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), have now officially named their 2.6 GW floating offshore wind farm project in Scotland. As per SSE Renewables, the mega wind farm is now called Ossian, an ancient Scottish leader whose sea adventures are recorded in history books of Scotland. David Willson, Ossian Senior Project Manager, said, “As one of the largest wind farm developments in Scottish waters, Ossian represents a new Scottish tradition in power generation – and, like the poems, links far-off lands through our partnership of companies from around the world, bringing together local knowledge and global expertise.” Mainstream Renewable Power and Ocean Winds Win Wind Energy Site in Scotland Also Read SSE Renewables and partners won rights to develop the wind farms in the recent ScotWind auction. The RE project will come up in the E1 Zone that lies in Firth of Forth near Angus Coast. As per records, it is one of the biggest lease areas offered by Crown Estate Scotland. The Giant Wind Energy Farm In January, 2022, SSE Renewables, along with partners, Japanese conglomerate Marubeni Corporation (Marubeni) and Danish fund management company Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) have won rights in the competitive ScotWind leasing round to develop what will become one of the world’s largest floating offshore wind farms off the east coast of Scotland. It is near to the existing 1.1GW Seagreen offshore wind farm project which SSE Renewables is currently constructing, as well as SSE Renewables’ planned 4.1GW Berwick Bank super-project, which is currently in development. The lease area has average water depths of 72m, making the site suitable for the deployment of floating offshore wind turbines to deliver up to 2.6 GW of new installed capacity – enough to be capable of powering almost 4.3 million Scottish homes and offsetting around 5 million tonnes of harmful carbon emissions each year. SSE Renewables said that upon completion, the project will become one of the world’s largest floating offshore wind farms, positioning Scotland as a global leader in floating offshore wind technology. As per SSE Renewables, once operational, the project will significantly contribute to the Scottish Government’s significantly enhanced ambition of delivering around 25 GW of next generation offshore wind projects via ScotWind. SSE Renewables owns a 40% share of the development rights with Marubeni and CIP each owning 30%.
