Germany’s AE Solar Plans EUR 1 Billion Solar Panel Facility in Romania

Prime Minister of Romania Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă has met with AE Solar and Black Sea Universities Network representatives and German renewables player AE Solar has announced that it would open a factory for solar panel manufacturing in Romania. AE Solar also mentioned that the company will see an investment coming to the tune of EUR 1 billion.

In the initial phase, the AE Solar larger project will have a capacity of 2 GW. Upon completion of the full integration of production flows in Romania, the AE Solar project will reach 10 GW. The Romanian government said that this represents a third of the European demand.

AE solar representatives have confirmed that they will carry out the first phase this year.

At the level of the Government, the resources that can be secured through European funding or from the state budget will be analyzed to support the materialization of the project.

Regarding ways to support the development of the enforceability of the large-scale investment, Black Sea Universities Network specialists will be involved, cooperating through a science park complementary to the production facilities.

Prime Minister Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă stated on AE Solar manufacturing project, “This investment will place Romania at the center of European solar panel manufacturing, contributing substantially to energy independence and environmental protection by using renewable, clean energy for electricity generation. Thus, the government responds not only to a pledge made at the European level but also to the need felt by citizens and private companies to access less expensive and more environmentally friendly solutions to have energy”, stated.

Romania currently has an RE capacity of 5,000 MW and the country looks install 10,000 MW in renewable sources that will be financed through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) and the Modernization Fund.

Recently, European Commission approved a financial state aid of EUR 259 million for Romania that will support investments in the country in the realm of production, assembling and recycling of solar cells, solar panels and batteries.
