FY25: India Set To Create New Record In Solar Installations

Highlights :

  • India’s solar energy capacity has surged from 81 GW at the end of March 2024 to 102.6 GW by the end of February 2025
  • This represents a remarkable addition of 20.75 GW in the first 11 months of FY25.
FY25: India Set To Create New Record In Solar Installations

The Indian renewable energy market is on track to set a new record in 2024-25 (FY25). According to the latest data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), India has already achieved an unprecedented level of solar installations in the first 11 months of this fiscal year.

As per CEA’s latest report, India’s solar energy capacity has surged from 81 GW at the end of March 2024 to 102.6 GW by the end of February 2025. This represents a remarkable addition of 20.75 GW in the first 11 months of FY25.

A Historic Increase in Solar Capacity

This growth significantly outpaces previous years’ performance. For comparison:

  • In the first 11 months of FY25, India added 8.79 GW of solar capacity.
  • In the same period of FY24, solar capacity additions stood at 10.38 GW.

With this rapid deployment, India is on track to achieve record-breaking annual additions ranging from 24 GW to even 26 GW—far exceeding recent years’ figures:

  • FY24: 15 GW total solar additions annually
  • FY23: 12.78 GW total solar additions annually

March: A Crucial Month for Solar Expansion

March has historically played a pivotal role in India’s renewable energy sector, as project commissioning accelerates before the fiscal year-end. Notable trends include:

  • FY24: By February 2024, 8.79 GW of solar capacity was added. In March alone, an additional 6.2 GW was installed.
  • FY23: By February, 10.38 GW had been added, followed by 2.4 GW in March.

Following this trend, India’s new solar capacity additions in March 2025 are expected to be between 2.5 GW and 4 GW or higher, potentially even higher. If the sector continues its momentum, total annual additions could reach between 28 GW and 30 GW.

February 2025 Performance Highlights

By the end of February 2025, India’s total renewable energy capacity (excluding large hydro) reached 167 GW, with:

  • Solar capacity: 102 GW
  • Wind capacity: 48 GW
  • New additions in February 2025:
    • Solar: 2.2 GW
    • Wind: 223 MW
    • Total renewable energy additions: 2.5 GW
