NTPC Races To 300 Billion Units in 2024-25 NTPC

NTPC Group has crossed the 300 Billion Units (BU) generation mark in FY 2024-25. It crossed the 300 BU generation mark on December 18, 2023 (FY 2023-24), a full 10 days faster than it did last year. While NTPC has an installed capacity of 76.5 GW, over 29.5 GW of capacity, including 9.6 GW of renewables, is under construction.

The company is committed to achieving 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032. Along with power generation, NTPC has ventured into various new business areas, including e-mobility, waste-to-energy, and green hydrogen solutions. It has also participated in bidding for the power distribution of Union Territories.

Recently the first part capacity of 55 MW out of the 105 MW Shajapur Solar Project (Unit-1) in Shajapur Solar Park, Madhya Pradesh, developed by NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL)—a step-down subsidiary of NTPC Limited through its subsidiary NTPC Green Energy Limited—was declared operational with effect from 00:00 Hrs on November 29, 2024.

With the successful listing of NTPC Green Energy, where it diluted a 10% stake in the IPO, NTPC is well poised to grow, thanks to the repayments from NTPC Green of almost Rs 7500 crore to the parent firm. NTPC informed analysts that it is considering awarding thermal capacity to the tune of 13.6 GW by the financial year 2026-27. This is in addition to the 11.16 GW thermal capacity already under construction.

For greater fuel security, it is enhancing its coal mining capacity as well. It is planned to enhance the estimated NTPC Group coal production from 40 million metric tons in FY25 to about 67 million metric tons up to FY29.

NTPC Green Recent Tie-Ups To Address Land Acquisition Hurdles

On the green energy front, a slew of partnerships announced in recent months through NTPC Green with state governments of Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra, besides one with ONGC for green power are designed to ensure that the issue of land acquisition is smoother for the firm in future projects. It has been identified as one of the biggest challenges by almost all developers, and NTPC, by typing up with State governments directly through JVs, hopes to make the most of its strengths while leveraging state government strengths as well.
