Fronius Launches ‘Reserva’, Its Battery Storage System

Austrian solar energy firm Fronius, known mostly for its solar inverters until now,  has launched the  Fronius Reserva. The Reserva is Fronius’s own battery to go woth inverters and use in solar systems, for a range between 6.3 and 15.8kWh.

“We believe in a future in which renewable energies cover 100 percent of the world’s energy needs.” This is the central message of the vision of 24 hours of sun – a vision that the company Fronius has been pursuing for many years. In practice, this means that the electricity generated from solar power should also be available at night. This requires a storage medium, a battery, and until now this has come from external partners. With the Fronius Reserva, the Austrian high-tech company is now initiating a trend reversal, closing an important gap in its product portfolio and becoming a complete provider of photovoltaic systems.

The Fronius Reserva is a high-voltage battery with DC coupling that guarantees almost loss-free charging and discharging performance. Capacities between 6.3 and 15.8 kWh are possible with two to five modules. The storage modules are stacked on top of each other like building blocks as a plug-and-play connection without the need for cabling. A total of up to four battery towers can be connected in parallel to achieve a maximum storage capacity of 63 kWh.

Complete PV system from a single source

“The biggest benefit for customers is that they will receive all the components for a complete photovoltaics system from us,” explains Fronius CSO Harald Scherleitner. “We are now offering solar power as a complete package, supplying everything from a single source. This has several advantages: Firstly, all products are perfectly matched to each other, and secondly, it only takes one app for complete energy management. And last but not least, it makes life easier for our customers. The tedious search for different manufacturers is a thing of the past; one contact person is all that is needed. This speeds up service and support in particular, makes it uncomplicated and saves time.”

The new battery storage system is optimally matched to the two hybrid inverters Fronius GEN24 Plus and Fronius Verto Plus and can therefore be seamlessly integrated into an existing photovoltaic system. The Solar.web app is all that is needed for visualization; no additional software is required. The Fronius Reserva status display also shows the current charge status and indicates if there is a fault.

Scherleitner adds that “We rely on the highest security standards and store all customer data exclusively on European servers. We conduct regular security audits by renowned companies and provide mandatory training within our software development as a matter of course.”

The Missing Link-Energy Storage From Fronius

Technology and design

Speaking of safety: The Fronius Reserva is backup power and black start capable. This means that the battery can continue to be charged and discharged even in the event of a power failure. In concrete terms, this means more independence and a reliable energy supply, even in emergency power situations.

The cells of the new battery storage system are made of lithium iron phosphate, or LFP for short, a cobalt-free material. LFP batteries are durable, low-maintenance, safe and lightweight and offer outstanding charging and discharging efficiency. The Fronius Reserva also impresses with its deliberately slim design. This means that the battery fits into narrow cellar corridors as well as small garages. It can generally be used at temperatures from -20 to 55 degrees Celsius and has an IP65 Safety class, which provides optimum protection against external influences. The Fronius Reserva is therefore ideal for both indoor and protected outdoor use.

“Longevity is particularly important to us at Fronius,” concludes Scherleitner. “We therefore guarantee that the Fronius Reserva will still deliver at least 80 percent of its usable energy after ten years from the start of the warranty.”
