Former Union Secretary of MORTH Vijay Chhibber Appointed as EPTA’s Director General

The Electric Power Transmission Association (EPTA) has appointed Vijay Chhibber, former Union Secretary of MORTH, as its new Director General with effect from April 08, 2020.

 

In his new role, Chhibber will be primarily responsible for engaging with stakeholders to further the goal of reliable 24×7 power supply through development of least-cost transmission system across the country.

Welcoming his appointment, Pratik Agarwal, Managing Director, Sterlite Power, said that “we are excited to welcome Mr Chhibber as the new Director General of EPTA. He brings a wealth of experience in managing several core sectors including infrastructure with the Government of India. We are confident that under his leadership, EPTA will create opportunities to strengthen the Inter-state and Intra-state transmission networks and the power transmission industry will scale new heights.”

Chhibber is a former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and has more than 37 years of experience of public service in the administrative services, where he served as the Union Secretary of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) with an additional charge of Chairman, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

On his appointment, Vijay Chhibber said that “I feel privileged to be appointed as the DG of EPTA. Power Transmission is central to India’s ambitious dream of 5 trillion-dollar economy and thus, it will be my endeavour to facilitate this sector to play its pivotal role in nation-building.”

During his previous roles, he worked on a number of key assignments in the Government of India (GoI) for various ministries such as Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Health, Commerce, Fertilizer, Shipping, Road Transport and Cabinet Secretariat. He was also Advisor to the Chief Minister, Government of Tripura.

He is a widely regarded technocrat and his insights and direction will be invaluable as we head into a strong phase of growth in the power transmission industry,” commented Vivek Singla, President T&D, Adani Transmission on the appointment.

On the other hand, PG Suresh Kumar, Business Head-Transmission Lines, L&T Infrastructure Development Projects Ltd (L&T IDPL), said that “Mr Chhibber’s appointment as the DG for EPTA is a positive step for the Association. We look forward to leveraging his presence and experience to drive growth in the sector.”

EPTA was founded in 2012 to provide level playing field for the sustained participation of private transmission companies in inter-state and intra-state transmission networks. It also offers a platform to discuss and induct new technologies for construction, operation and maintenance of power transmission networks.
